Will your shades fit on my lamp base?
That will depend on the type of base that you have - Our shades are made with a ring that fits a 41mm diameter ES bulbholder. A plastic reducer ring is supplied with every shade that brings the size of the ring down to 29mm for fitment to most standard UK sized lampholders. If in doubt, measure the diameter of the ring on your old shade or unscrew the rings on the lamp base bulbholder & measure the diameter. The part of the ring that attaches to the bulbholder sits 4cm into the shade, meaning the bulb will be approximately 10 - 15cm into the shade, depending on bulb size.
Will your shades fit on my ceiling pendant?
See above - the same applies to the lampholders on ceiling pendants - only upside down!
Do your shades come with everything I need to attach them to the ceiling?
No - they are shades only. We sell all the bits & bobs that you need to hang your shades in our accessories section.
What type of bulb can I use?
We recommend that you use a maximum 60 Watt bulb.
Can you make shades out of my own fabric?
Not if it's just one or two shades - all fabrics are different & some don't adhere to the flame retardant lining material very well. We test all of our own fabrics thoroughly before we make them available for sale.

What is a diffuser & do I need one?
A diffuser is a thin piece of rigid PVC that sits inside the bottom of your shade when being used on a ceiling pendant. It is intended to disguise or lessen the appearance of the internal fitting & reduce glare from the bulb. There are two versions available - white & opaque. White is non-see through & has a hole cut in the middle (polo mint style) while opaque is one piece & is made from a 'frosted' style PVC. They are not permanent & can easily be popped in & out of the shade as required. Generally diffusers are only sold with shades with white linings - if you're choosing a coloured lining it's not really worth getting a diffuser as the whole point of going for the coloured lining is to show it off! Diffusers are not designed to be used on shades fitted to table or floor lamps.
If I go for a coloured lining, will the light coming out of the shade have a coloured glow?
That depends - For example, If you go for a bright orange lining on a small 20cm shade, then yes - the bulb will be close to the lining so the glow will have a significant orange hue. On the other hand if you go for an orange lining on a 45cm shade, the bulb will be further away from the lining so the orange glow will be there, but less obvious.
Of course, some colours are warmer than others - reds/oranges/yellows/pinks will give off a warmer glow. Blues/greens/greys will be much cooler.
I'm not sure about colours - can I get samples?
Yes! Just get in touch with us via our contact form & let us know which fabric & lining samples you'd like, together with your postal address & we'll send some out to you.
I ordered my shade last week - where is it?
We don't have a big warehouse full of shades, we make each one carefully to order, by hand. As stated in the product description, they'll be sent within 10-14 working days of payment. Working days do not include weekends, bank or seasonal holidays.
We don't like keeping you waiting & do try to get all orders made & sent as quickly as possible, but during busy periods we do need the full 14 working days to get everything done!
Are your shades safe?
Yes. All our shades are made with a flame retardant lining which is tested for fire resistance to comply with BS EN 60598-1-2008 - the British Standard for Luminaries.
Our PVC lining material has been tested in the Lighting Association laboratories and has passed the glow wire test. Fabrics, textiles or paper that is laminated to our PVC, becomes fire resistant. Test certificates are avilable in PDF format - if required, please get in touch via the contact form
I've tried calling you, but I just get your voicemail - why won't you answer?
Our apologies - we always try to answer the phone, but if we don't, it'll be because we've got our hands full. Please leave a message & we'll always get back to you as soon as we can. Likewise if you send us an email via the contact form we'll reply as soon as possible.
I'm trying to place an order, but I can't add items to my cart?
Occasionally we have to put a hold on orders - this is usually due to large commercial projects which take over the workshop. We try & work around this whenever possible, but sometimes it's unavoidable.
We always keep the amount of time that we're closed as short as we can & display a message at the top of every page of the site informing you when we'll be back.
Where are you - do you have a showroom I can visit?
We're based in South Devon. We do not currently have a showroom as such, just a busy workshop! If there's anything you particularly want to see, just let us know & we'll arrange an appointment for you to come & see us.
